Master Molder SM Certification Program

Since its inception in 1998, RJG's Master Molder Certification Program has grown to be the plastics industry standard for hands-on training. The Master Molder program is an extremely rigorous training experience. Attendees can expect to log fifty or more hours of hands-on machine time per module.

The series consists of three (3), two-week modules that must be completed with a passing score before moving on to the next course. Successful completion of each module is determined by accumulated points in the various aspects of the course, including written and on-machine examinations.

This program is designed for anyone who needs to understand and demonstrate injection molding skills at the machine, including those responsible for implementing a processing strategy or held accountable for quality control issues. Students learn to apply methods, strategies and techniques of injection molding from the plastic's point of view. Taught in a real-world production floor environment, certified individuals leave with solid skills that can be applied immediately in their facility.

Master Molder SM Module I

Module I covers the core principles of Systematic Molding and molding from the plastic's point of view. Different aspects of processing are covered including: the clamp, the mold, hydraulics, instrumentation, polymer basics and behavior, heat, flow, pressure, cooling, economics, graph interpretation, and troubleshooting. Each principle is discussed in the classroom and then practiced in the lab. Students will also learn how machine controls affect the primary variables in the molding process.

Upon successful completion of Module I students are certified as Master Molder Technicians. Module I graduates are encouraged to follow up with Module II.

  • Building a Robust Decoupled II Process
  • Troubleshooting a Process Using the “Four Plastics Variables”
  • Creating Machine-Independent Process Setup Sheets
  • Understanding the Process from the “Plastic's Point of View”
  • Understanding the Root Causes of Process Variation
  • Understanding Fundamentals of the Mold, Machine and Material

Master Molder SM Module II

In Module II you will learn to apply cavity pressure control strategies and DECOUPLED MOLDING SM techniques using instrumentation and data acquisition. The course covers the proper use of instrumentation and how to achieve optimum process control utilizing Decoupled III processing techniques. You will learn how monitoring techniques are used to detect and contain suspect parts and how to do accurate machine and mold qualifications. The instructor will demonstrate the capabilities of the eDART System™. Students will build a process using the eDART and implement template matching based on the conditions of the four plastic variables. In addition, the class will break down the graphical data retrieved from the eDART to demonstrate how the data can be analyzed to better understand the process and make adjustments to improve processing conditions.

Successful completion of Master Molder Module II qualifies students as RJG Certified Master Molders.

  • Cavity Pressure Control using DECOUPLED III Molding Techniques
  • Reading and Interpreting Cavity Pressure Curves
  • Template Matching
  • Setting Alarms to Automatically Detect Abnormal Parts
  • Process Controls & Monitoring
  • Molding Machine Evaluation for World Class Performance
  • Making Identical Parts While Moving Molds from Machine to Machine

Master Molder SM – Train the Trainer

The final module in the Master Molder SM Certification Series is optional. It is designed for companies who would benefit from having an RJG Certified Trainer on staff. This trainer would be responsible for instructing others in their organization on proper molding methodologies and techniques. Upon successful completion, the staff instructor would be certified to teach Injection Molding Essentials, Systematic Molding I and Master Molder I courses to company employees. A knowledgeable, well trained staff strengthens your organization and makes it more competitive.

‘Train the Traininer’ expects a firm grasp of the materials taught in Master Molder SM modules I + II. Methods for training others on the strategies, techniques and implementation processes used in RJG's Master Molder Certification Series are emphasized. As part of this module RJG has partnered with the Michigan Technical Education Center to train students on the techniques of presenting, teaching, talking in front of groups, organizing presentations and thinking out of the box. We also cover ways to incorporate positive feedback in order to improve presentations.

Successful completion of Master Molder Module III qualifies a student as an RJG Certified Master Molder Instructor.

Prospective trainers are evaluated on:

  • Knowledge of Material
  • Speaking Skills
  • Use of Visual Aids
  • Responses to Class Questions
  • Encouragement of Class Participation
  • Teaching Skills at the Molding Machine
